Electricity labeling
Since the Ordinance on Guarantees of Origin and Electricity Labeling came into force in 2006, electricity suppliers have been legally obligated to declare the origin of their electricity annually. Declarations are made both physically and online on the stromkennzeichnung.ch platform, operated by the VSE and Pronovo AG on behalf of the SFOE.
Established in 2006
Full declaration requirement from 2018
Quarterly labeling from 2027
Electricity labeling according to the new Electricity Act
Quarterly electricity labeling
-
Starting in 2027, energy suppliers will be required to collect and use Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for each quantity of electricity supplied on a quarterly basis. This means that only GOs from winter production may be used for electricity consumption in winter. This ensures that the origin of the electricity coincides with consumption and avoids distortions caused by seasonal differences in electricity production and demand.
Extended declaration requirement
-
In addition to the origin of the electricity, COâ‚‚ emissions and the amount of nuclear waste generated for the product and the supplier mix will also have to be disclosed in the future. This information must be sent to end customers once a year along with the electricity bill.
Adjustment of electricity accounting
-
Electricity accounting must be maintained quarterly for both the quantity of electricity supplied and the total electricity consumption. This requires more precise data collection and management to meet the new requirements.
Mandatory graphic representation
-
The graphical representation of electricity labeling will be mandatory starting with the 2025 supply year. It must be sent to end consumers once a year along with their electricity bill. The presentation is intended to help consumers better understand the origin and environmental impact of their electricity and make informed decisions.
